Overview
Colorado's escalating wildfire threat has prompted new building standards. The Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code (CWRC), adopted in 2025, establishes requirements affecting siding, roofing, and exterior materials statewide.
What Is the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code?
The CWRC creates consistent wildfire-resistant construction standards throughout Colorado, particularly in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones. It targets new construction and major remodeling projects, aiming to minimize ignition risk from embers, heat, and flames.
Siding Requirements Under the New Code
The code mandates noncombustible or ignition-resistant siding in many areas. Compliant options include:
- Fiber cement siding (James Hardie)
- Stucco systems
- Metal siding
- Masonry or stone veneer
- Fire-retardant-treated wood
Traditional wood siding is no longer widely acceptable without treatment. Vinyl siding faces restrictions and typically requires installation over fire-rated assemblies.
Impact on Existing Homes
Existing homes don't face immediate replacement mandates. However, major remodeling or siding replacement projects must comply with current codes. Insurance considerations and resale value are motivating many homeowners to upgrade earlier.
Benefits of Upgrading Your Siding
- Enhanced fire resistance and safety
- Potential insurance premium reductions
- Increased property value and curb appeal
- Compliance with current local building codes
- Better energy efficiency and lower maintenance
Hardie ColorPlus Siding: Colorado's Smart Choice
James Hardie fiber cement siding is fully compliant with Colorado's wildfire codes and is built to withstand the state's demanding climate, including hail, temperature swings, UV exposure, and now wildfire risk. The ColorPlus® Technology finish is factory-applied and baked on, meaning it resists fading, cracking, and chipping far longer than field-painted alternatives.
