Charleston roofs are built around Hugo. Since 1989 the coastal wind codes have changed what a replacement must include: ring-shank nails, a sealed deck, tighter nailing patterns and attention to the edges where wind gets under the roof first. Matthew in 2016 tested them again. Older homes in the historic peninsula add slate, copper and standing seam metal, which need a roofer who can repair them rather than tear them off. Out in Summerville and Goose Creek the problem is pine debris and thunderstorms instead of salt.
